Cooking has always been so intimidating for me, especially when making ‘fancier’ items in my own kitchen. Throughout this *extra* time at home I have been trying out new recipes and much to my surprise, have been quite successful.
One dish that I have always avoided making at home as been halibut. I am not the biggest fish person (I have always preferred a milder fish), but halibut has always been my go-to order at restaurants. I wanted to try making it in my own kitchen and so that is exactly what I did.
Halibut is sometimes not available but if you try to be somewhat organized, *most* of the time you can get your hands on a couple of filets. I have been using two places to source my halibut. The first is Lovers Seafood and the second is Whole Foods. Whole Foods runs out SO quickly but if you are lucky sometimes you happen upon it. Lovers Seafood gets DAILY shipments of fish (yes, even during this time). So I usually all around lunch to secure my filets!
The best part about getting halibut from both Whole Foods and Lovers Seafood is that they both will provide you with seasoning for your fish. Lovers Seafood provides you (if you ask) with a salt + pepper combo (classic, IMO) but this is where Whole Foods really shines….they have 52 different seasoning options. Yes, overwhelming but the guys are so good there they can always recommend something they think you (or the people/person) you are cooking for would enjoy. Both places I can’t say enough great things about in terms of sourcing fish, so if you are wanting to try to make halibut for yourself I highly recommend either place! Okay, now for the How to Cook portion. See below!
Halibut
PREP TIME: 5 minutes
COOK TIME: 12-15 minutes
SERVINGS: 1 six ounce filet per person (ask them to remove the skin)
INGREDIENTS:
*I like to ask whomever I am purchasing my halibut from to provide seasoning. If for some reason they forget, I just use salt + pepper, a pinch of cayenne pepper and then top with lemmon slices. Personally, I think you can really season your fish with whatever you want/have in your pantry. It’s really hard to mess it up (coming from someone who is not a professional)*
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees
- Prior to putting halibut in the oven put a tiny little bit of olive oil on top of each filet
- Cook for 12-15 minutes (at minute 12 I always take out and cut in the middle to make sure it is cooked enough, I usually end up cooking mine about 13 1/2 minutes because I like my filets a little more cooked)
- Serve and enjoy!
Again, not a chef so I am sure if a professional is reading this they are shaking their head but this is what works for me! Enjoy. xx
