Cleaning high-traffic areas such as doorknobs and countertops regularly will prevent your home from becoming filthy over time. Involving all family members with cleaning responsibilities also helps.

Cleaning an extremely neglected home can be daunting, so it is best to divide up the task into manageable steps.

1. Clear away the clutter.

Clutter can quickly transform into filth, creating real issues in your home. Not simply an inconvenience, filth can include mildew, mold, animal feces and toxic chemicals from paints and solvents that pose real dangers.

Cleaning an overrun home is much harder than regular housekeeping, which requires you to start from the bottom up by clearing away as much clutter as possible prior to beginning.

Establish a cleaning schedule to help maintain cleanliness in your home or workplace. By planning to complete several small cleaning tasks every day, keeping up with maintenance will become simpler. Make sure that dust, cobwebs and surfaces are kept free from dirt.

2. Vacuum the floors.

An unpleasant house will contain unpleasant messes that are difficult to clean up on your own, so hiring professional cleaners may be best in this instance; alternatively, family and friends could help.

Utilizing an appropriate vacuum cleaner with appropriate attachments will make this task simpler and more effective, while making sure to regularly sweep away dirt and dust.

At minimum, it's wise to vacuum and mop high traffic areas like kitchens once every week; if necessary, increase this frequency accordingly if your home is particularly dirty; the goal should be achieving an manageable state for cleaning purposes.

3. Wipe down surfaces.

If your home has been neglected, many surfaces will require a deeper clean than usual. Start by wiping down furniture (using a gentle cleaner), shelving, built-ins and light fixtures; wipe down light fixtures and lamps before dusting all surfaces including baseboards using a cotton tube sock in your dominant hand while moving objects out of its path as you do so.

Do not forget to clean behind kitchen cabinets, woodwork and mirrors/windows thoroughly as well. Use degreasing products on areas that frequently get dark patches from grease from people's hands.

Note that areas touched frequently, like door handles, light switches and TV remotes - which contain far more germs than simple dirt and dust - must also be thoroughly wiped down to ensure optimal hygiene.

4. Disinfect doorknobs and handles.

Doorknobs and light switches can be some of the dirtiest surfaces in your home. People touch them multiple times each day, carrying with them germs that cause colds, flus, Salmonella infection and E coli outbreaks.

At least twice each week, particularly during flu season, it is highly advised to disinfect surfaces using either a disinfecting wipe or spray-on cleaning agent to kill off bacteria and viruses found on these surfaces.

Degreasing solutions may also help remove dark patches of grime from doors and handles, making the knobs and handles appear shiny and new again.

5. Wash the windows.

One of the most visible areas in any dirty home are its windows. They should be thoroughly washed of dirt, debris, bird droppings and spider webs using a long-handled brush, while taking care not to scratch their frames with harsh scrubbing brushes.

Degreasers can also prove invaluable if you have one available, helping remove grease build-up on windows that would otherwise be impossible for regular cleaners to penetrate, particularly gloss surfaces. Saturating them over windows will aid in their removal.

Cleaning an untidy house can be a tedious and exhausting task, and it is easy to become disillusioned in the middle of it all. But with the right approach and some help from friends or professional cleaners (if applicable), great results are achievable.
