How to Choose and Style Garments for Curvy Hips

Today we are diving into a question that resonates with many woman: how to style outfits that make you feel confident, especially when you have specific areas you’d like to camouflage, like a set of curvy hips. One of my readers wrote to me looking for ways to feel confident and stylish while navigating the challenges of broad hips, casual living, and the sweltering Barbados heat. The goal is to create a balanced silhouette that accentuates your natural curves without compromising your comfort.

Understanding Your Body Shape

First things first—understanding your body shape is crucial for creating outfits that work for you. “What’s my body shape?”, is one of the questions I get asked the most. I get emails daily from people wanting to know their shape which is why I have developed my free Body Shape Calculator Quiz.

It’s a simple test to help you discover which of the 7 most common body shapes you may be. There are no measurements required (as measurements are not a reliable indicator of body shape as a circumference doesn’t tell you how your shape is distributed).  If you feel like you’ve got curvy hips, chances are you are one of these body shapes:  The X shape (similar width shoulders and hips but widest point of the hips is at the upper thigh), the A shape (known as the pear) with hips wider than shoulders, or the 8 Shape, which is also an hourglass shape but the widest point of the hips is at the high hip, just below the waist (think classic Barbie doll shape) rather than at the upper thigh.  There are some figure flattery guidelines that differ depending on which of these shapes you are, but there are some others that work with all these shapes.

Styling Tops to Flatter Curvy Hips

  • Look for waisted tops – Choose fitted tops that naturally sit close to your body around the waist. Knit tops can be an excellent option, as they often have enough stretch to remain comfortable while still defining your shape.
  • Avoid excess volume – Steer clear of overly voluminous tops that can add bulk to your figure. Instead, select styles that gently skim your body without clinging too tightly. If you love a voluminous top but want to accentuate your waist, consider adding a piece of elastic to the hem. This simple adjustment can create a blouson effect, gathering the fabric at your waist and giving you that desired hourglass shape.
  • Tuck in Your Tops – bringing your tops in at the waist if they have volume will highlight your naturally narrower point and draw attention up and away from your hips.
  • Choose the right length – Avoid tops that fall below your hip bones. Instead, opt for lengths that hit at or above your hip bone to keep proportions balanced and flattering.  If you prefer a longer top, look for tunics that are fitted at the waist and have a slight flare or peplum effect. This style can provide coverage without adding bulk.

Hot Weather Tips

When it’s hot you don’t want to add layers and jackets to hide your hips.  Instead here are some ideas you can try out:

  • Wear a top in a lighter colour than your bottom, you bottom doesn’t have to be a lot darker than your top, just a bit darker to be receding.
  • Wear accessories near your face – jewellery and glasses and hats are all great ways of drawing attention up and away from your hips.
  • Busy patterns are distracting – don’t think you can only wear dark solids on your lower half, busy patterns distract the eye.
  • A column of colour is always elongating.

Play with Proportions

When styling broad hips, remember the principle of volume. Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium. When we talk about dressing for your body shape and body proportions, what we are trying to do is create visual balance. The Principle of Volume is an important principle to remember as too much fabric will swamp us and can make you look larger. 

If you love straight-leg or wide-leg pants, they can create a stunning elongated look when paired with a fitted or cinched top and work well for A and X shapes. This combination helps maintain an hourglass effect by accentuating your waist and balancing your proportions.

For those of you who enjoy wearing long skirts, remember that they can be incredibly flattering when styled correctly. A-line skirts can balance broader hips beautifully if you have an A or X shape, but they are no good for 8 shape bodies. They skim over your curves and create a flattering shape without clinging. Look for skirts made from breathable, lightweight materials. Flowy skirts can add movement and elegance to your summer wardrobe without feeling heavy or restrictive. Just remember while you want to camouflage, too much fabric can make you look larger. Choose lightweight fabrics that flow nicely without overwhelming your frame.

Finishing Touches

Statement Jewellery – Wearing larger-scale jewellery can draw attention away from your hips and create visual interest. Think bold necklaces or oversized earrings that frame your face.

Footwear Choices – Consider shoes that elongate your legs, like nude pumps or stylish sandals, to create a seamless line.
