How to Cancel BT Sport

Posted on the 13 November 2018 by Pauljg1

BT Sport is the package of sports channels offered by BT and are offered on a subscription service. This means you pay for it each month and can cancel it if you no longer require the service. However there may be penalties or cancellation charges for doing this, so it is best to understand how to cancel BT Sport before you do it.

The basic process

BT Sport is handled as a separate package to your other BT subscriptions such as telephone line rental or broadband. This means that if you want to cancel the package, you need to get in touch with them specifically. You can do this by visiting the main website and selecting the My BT section to find your BT Sports package.

This will tell you the reference information you need to then ring the BT Sports contact number which is 0843 557 3380. This lets you speak to a member of staff who can go through the cancellation process and let you know if there are cancellation charges and what you owe. If you are happy with this, they can go ahead and cancel the service then let you know what date your access to BT Sport will stop.

What is BT Sport?

BT Sport is a bolt-on or add-on package that is often offered as a part of a deal when you take BT TV. It includes the four BT sports channels along with BoxNation. Each channel has a standard and HD version so if you have a High Definition TV, you can make the most of it. Currently, BT Sport offers a range of top football and other sports events as well as motor racing, boxing and rugby.

If you have taken a deal with BT that included the BT Sports package but find you don't watch it or want to cut down on your outgoings, then you might want to see what the cost will be to cancel it. This may result in a saving on your monthly bill, but you also incur cancellation charges for doing this that might mean it isn't worth cancelling. The customer services team will be able to walk you through this to make a decision.

Cancelling the package

You may also want to cancel the package as you have found a better package through another provider or a better deal elsewhere. You may also be unhappy with the range or quality of services offered on their channels and that your favourite sport isn't well represented.

When you ring customer services, they will ask why you want to cancel. If the problem related to technical issues, they may suggest trying to solve them before you cancel the service. It might be worth considering this to avoid the cancellation charges.

When you took the package, you will have committed to a certain length of contract, normally 12-24 months. If you cancel within this period, you may have to pay the full remaining amount or a specific cancellation charge. This may be reduced if you are switching to another BT package but get this information before making a choice.

Calling customer services

You do need to be the account holder when you ring BT Sports to cancel the package. They will go through identity checks before discussing the account including answering security questions or other verifications.

They will then detail what it will cost to cancel and confirm you are happy with this. You may need to pay something immediately or they may take a payment on your next monthly bill depending on the situation. They will also let you know what date your subscription will stop.

If you don't want to call, you can visit the website and use the Live Chat option to speak to someone about the cancellation. They may be able to give a quote, but you may need to speak to someone to do security checks and finish the process.
