How To Be A Fat Bitch E-Course: Assignment and Discussion #2

By Bethtinkerbell @TinksLostGirls

‘Reclaim the word fat and do something amazing with it. Make art, take photos of yourself with fat written on you, bake a cake with fat written in frosting, etc. I can't wait to see what you do! Blog it, Instagram it, Tweet it (#fatbitchecourse, #nearsightedowl), etc. and share it in the comments below.’

I struggled a little with this assignment, mainly because I couldn’t decide what would be the best way to reclaim the word. I wanted to reclaim the word and make an impact by posting publically where people who aren’t aware of my blog can also find it. I decided to edit a photo which I already had and then Instagram it, however the picture I chose is one which I’m not sure about sharing so for now it will just be here.

‘What do you love most about the word fat? How has the word fat evolved for you?’

I think what I love about the word fat is that it is what it is, it doesn’t pretend to sugar coat anything in the way that “plus size”, “curvy”, and “voluptuous” can. They are words that people use to hide behind the fact they aren’t comfortable using the word fact but "curvy” isn’t an accurate description for all fat people there are fat curvy people, and slim curvy people, and this is because it is a shape and not a size. I know it’s a word often used so as not to offend people. I think for people that don’t like the word fat then “plus size” is the best term to use because it is understood by most people and widely used.

Fat is no longer just a description that is used to explain my size, it’s something I associate myself with and i’m happy to be associated with it. It’s not a word to shy away from, by accepting it other people can’t hurt me by using it, random people can make snide comments under their breath using it, or shout it at me across the street and all they’re doing is confirming something I know and that i’m happy about. Those people that try to use the word to hurt me can’t do any home, and if they have a problem with me being fat and fabulous then it’s their problem not mine.
