How Do You Get Depression

Today I was asked “So how do you get depression?”  From a mum who is feeling rather frustrated and angry as she believed she was a strong person and had never thought she would ever fall victim again after suffering with postnatal depression in the past.

Here we take a look at some of the common causes/triggers of depression and if you have ever asked the question – how do you get depression? You may find your answer right here;

  • Loss and Bereavement
  • Money worries
  • Redundancy
  • Divorce
  • Relationship breakdown
  • Recovering from an illness
  • Stress

Depression is unique in that there is no single cause. It can develop for many different reasons and triggers are rarely avoidable.

While some triggers and causes are clear others are not.

Some develop depression after losing a loved one, after divorce or a relationship breakdown for example.

The stresses we have in our lives make us vulnerable to this mental illness. A psychical illness, losing a job and money worries are other prime examples of triggers.

We have all heard of the term “Downward spiral” and depression seems to creep in when we are at our lowest and struggling to cope with what’s happening in our life.

Something happens and things just seem to get worse. We lose focus and before we know it, we are withdrawn and feeling empty.

There is no easy answer to how do you get depression? And sometimes there is no way to avoid it.

We all need friends and we all need support, but when you are depressed you lose all interest in the normal everyday activities you once enjoyed. How do you get depression? It kind of just happens and there is not a whole lot you can do about it.

Socialising becomes less and less and without friends around you, it can seem lonely and if nobody cares, you do not see that it is you who is pushing everyone away. It’s a vicious circle.

Choosing to deal with problems on your own is what allows depression to worsen.

Women who have recently given birth are at high risk of developing depression due to the hormonal, physical and emotional changes taking place. Postnatal depression can have serious consequences if not treated

Have you ever been depressed? Do you know what caused it?
