Flashmob...
What Wikipedia defines as "a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression."
The phenomenon sprung up in 2003 and gained in popularity until it got to the point where you were a nobody unless you had participated in one (I'm still a nobody... if anybody cares).
Then, they starting happening everywhere all the time, and the novelty began to ware off. They're still done, of course, but, for the most part they're either pretty poorly done or no one cares.
Until now...
There's a new flashmob video on the scene. It was published to YouTube on April 1st and, since then, it's been seen by viewers all over the world thanks to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. According to YouTube stats, it's already been viewed 284,254 times at the time of this writing.
And who do we have to thank for bringing sexy back to the flashmob?
...the Dutch. Dutch bank ING to be exact.
The flashmob took place at a shopping mall here in the Netherlands and is, perhaps one of the most well-done flashmobs to hit the internet. Fitting, as it was in Manhatten, New York (formerly New Amsterdam) where the very first flashmob was held in 2003.
ING, a sponsor of the Rijksmuseem in Amsterdam, put this flashmob together to celebrate the return of Rembrandt's Night Watch to the museum. The Rijksmuseum will reopen on 13 April after having undergone a decade of renovations.
