House & Home : Workspaces for Children

By Simonea

Work begins very soon on creating a loft in our house....it's going to be my son's bedroom.
At the moment it looks like a huge space but I know that when steels, insulation & beams etc are added, some of that will be lost....despite of our architect & builder planning to maximise the space as much as possible.
We are adding a dormer & several Velux windows in the roof though & it's going to be a fabulous room for an 8 year old boy....he's excited to move in & I'm excited to decorate :)
I'm deliberately ignoring the fact that I expected the loft to be completed by now....and actually, I have no idea when it will be, it almost certainly won't be done before I leave for France....best laid plans etc....
Anyway....I have lots of ideas for the space.Much like my daughter's room, my aim is to make it light & bright with plenty of colour, I want it to be a happy & stimulating room.
On my list : a large map, a cool workspace, fun (& practical) storage & Ikea Expedit unit/s (I am obsessed with these!)On his list : a mid-sleeper bed, a reading nook & a very soft carpet!
Some of the storage will be located under the eaves of the loft, I'm not really going to know exactly how much space we'll have until it's been built....and for the desk, I love the idea of a long shelf-like/breakfast bar-style desk with a high stool, possibly in front of the window to make the most of the view....
He has lots of small possessions....lego, cars etc plus many books....the Expedit is actually great for storing these & also adds color to the room, my daughter has them in her room & it's a great way of still being able to see everything but also keeping it fairly tidy.
My son has also requested a filing cabinet...don't ask me why?!I spotted this one & figured, at that price, I could spray paint it a bright color & it would be perfect.
I'm going to be re-using & repainting a few items from his old bedroom....just waiting for a sunny weekend & I plan to get them outside & get.it.done.
I love what I was able to do with my daughter's new room - which I must photograph & share here on the blog....it's given me ideas & confidence to do the same with my son's....watch this space!
So....here are some of my favorite workspaces....children's rooms are just so much fun, aren't they?all via Pinterest
