Hot Buttered Rum

By Courtneysims @courtneynora

I spent my Sunday wishing there were a way for every team still in the running for the Super Bowl to lose. My wishes obviously did not come true, but a girl can dream! While dreaming, I noticed something: It’s been a while since I talked about my dear friend Captain Morgan. Don’t worry, rum and cokes still hold my heart, but this weekend I wanted to try something new. And something hot.

I knew I’d heard of butter rum, but mostly in the candy form. I figured it had to be based on something real. I did a little cocktail research and whipped a couple up for Ben and myself (they’re so easy!) I don’t know if anyone else has this issue, but when I make warm drinks, the booze smell is so strong that I have a hard time trying it. If you’re like me, you might take a whiff of this drink and think, “Whoa!” First of all, there’s nothing wrong with a little whoa in a drink, but I promise you it won’t taste as strong as it smells.

Hot Buttered Rum Recipe:

1/2 Tablespoon room-temperature butter
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 oz. Captain Morgan spiced rum
6 oz. hot water

In an 8-ounce mug, add your butter.

Add in your brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla and use a small fork to mash everything together into a paste.

Pour in your rum.

Then add your hot water.

Stir until everything is melted.

Drink up and take solace in the fact that at least Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are gone for the season!
