Hong Kong Dim Sum, Dim Sum and More Dim Sum!

No trip to Hong Kong is complete without dim sum. For a huge dim sum lover like me, Hong Kong is paradise. Borrowing a phrase from the tour guide, dim sum in Hong Kong is really “cheap cheap and good good”!

I mentioned in my last post that the tour guide brought us for dim sum breakfast on the day of our city tour. What’s special about this restaurant is that it’s not exactly a dim sum restaurant but one that specialises in hot pot – 寧記麻辣火鍋海鮮酒家 Lin Kee Hotpot. What’s worth mentioning more is the owner of the restaurant. The tour guide told us that the restaurant is owned by famous Hong Kong director Wong Jing 王晶 and many of his movies are filmed in this very restaurant.

To save time, 8 different dim sum items were pre-ordered for us. I love every one of them, especially the char siew cheong fun! The cheong fun is so smooth and thin that you can see the big pieces of char siew filling in it. Yums! My son loves the egg tart so much that he took all our share.

Another dim sum place – Tao Heung Pier 88 稻香超級漁港, was recommended by my mother-in-law. Again, this is a restaurant that has a variety of food like hotpot, cantonese cuisine, seafood etc. But we were only there for their dim sum. Tao Heung has many restaurants in Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and New Territories. As we stayed in Kowloon, we visited the 2 outlets nearest to us – Grand Plaza in Mongkok and Nathan Hotel along Nathan Road. We love their dim sum and it’s so affordable that we had a couple of our meals here. We paid about HKD 168 for 8 dim sum items. That’s about SGD 28 for 4 pax! Wouldn’t you go back?

Other than the cheong fun, which was a bit of a disappointment, the rest of the dim sum were great. Our favourites are the deep-fried beancurd skin roll with prawns and black sesame paste mochi (didn’t manage to take a photo ). Worth every calorie. If you visit the restaurant at Grand Plaza, note that they are on both 3rd and 4th floors. When you go to the 3rd floor, they will ask you to go to the 4th floor so that you won’t have to wait or share table. I’m not sure if it meant higher prices. We chose to stay on the 3rd floor. The restaurant was very crowded but we got a table straightaway. Personally I prefer the outlet at Grand Plaza to Nathan Hotel. The restaurant is bigger, more crowded but they also have more staff so you get served faster.

I was also keen to try a Michelin Star dim sum restaurant. Given that Tim Ho Wan has opened an outlet in Singapore, my friend recommended that I try the other 1 Michelin Star dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong – One Dim Sum 一點心.

Silly me just assumed that all dim sum places are opened early and didn’t bother checking the restaurant’s opening hours. Or maybe it’s just the kiasu Singaporean in me, wanting to be there early to beat the expected long queue. Turned out they don’t open till 11am so we settled our meal somewhere else, walked around, and came back again late afternoon.

I was very surprised that there was no queue at all and we were given a table straightaway. The restaurant is small and tables are rather limited. Unlike Tao Heung where we got to choose the type of tea we want, we were each served a standard glass of chinese tea at One Dim Sum and it costs HKD 3 per glass (refillable).

Having had quite a lot of dim sum over the few days, we decided to order something different from the standard dim sum items we usually have. All I can say is “this is nice, that is nice, everything is nice!” I’m missing its dim sum already. And I can see why my friend recommended me this restaurant. I saw a staff there who looks very much like him. Lol.

So what’s my favorite dim sum item from One Dim Sum? All of the above! I just wish I have space to eat more. One Dim Sum is probably one of the cheapest 1 Michelin Star restaurant. The price here is about the same as what we paid at Tao Heung. Totally worth it. ♥
