Hair thinning or hair loss is a common condition that affects women during pregnancy and usually peaks four months after delivery. Typically, we lose around 100 hair strands each day (1). If you notice a loss of more than 300 strands of hair post-delivery, it could be a cause for concern.

The scientific term that refers to the excessive shedding of hair in one to five months following pregnancy is Telogen Effluvium. An interesting point to note here is that this occurs in almost forty to fifty percent of pregnant women and is usually temporary. If you have been suffering from post-pregnancy hair loss, here are some natural home remedies that could help you grow your hair back and regain its lost luster.

Home Remedies for Post Pregnancy Hair Fall

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

About ninety percent of your hair grows at any given time, while ten percent of it is at a resting stage. Every two to three months, the hair in the resting stage falls out and creates room for new hair to replace it. During pregnancy, the amount of hair that goes into this resting phase increases, which causes an unusual increase in hair loss. Under normal conditions, the excessive hair fall should stop within three to four months post-pregnancy (2).

When pregnant, the increased level of estrogen hormones in the body prevents hair shedding. Post-delivery, however, when hormones return to their normal levels, hair loss occurs. Hair fall visibly increases three months after delivery. Thus, the restricted hair loss resulting from an increase in the hormonal levels during pregnancy is sometimes shed all at once post-delivery when the hair loss cycle returns to normal.

When Does Your Hair Grow Back To Normal After Pregnancy?

You might notice hair growing back in a matter of six to twelve months under normal conditions (3). This regrowth is usually noticeable around the first birthday of your child. If you suffer from baldness or permanent hair loss, chances are that the body is fighting other complications or there is a lack of essential vitamins and minerals that need to be addressed immediately.
