Nausea is a feeling of uneasiness originating primarily from digestive distress. We all have been there at some point of time and it’s safe to say that it’s not a nice feeling. Usually a precursor to vomiting, nausea can be caused by a number of reasons; such as dehydration, acid reflux, food poisoning, certain medication or pregnancy. No matter what causes nausea, you can ease the symptoms to a great extent with these simple, natural remedies for nausea. When the anti-nausea medication just won’t provide relief, these simple ingredients in your kitchen will indeed be lifesavers should a bout of nausea hit you.
GingerGinger is rich in phenols, which have a calming effect on the irritated stomach and bowels. They help counteract the excessive acidity by triggering the release of certain digestive enzymes. Besides, ginger helps push the digested food ahead, making it leave your system quicker.
The best ways to consume fresh ginger is by adding it to your tea or by making a cooling ginger ale. Ginger ale is very soothing and easy to make. Do not go for the store-bought ginger ale bottles. Always make it fresh at home.
If that is too much work for you, you can chew on some candied ginger too. Make sure you do not exceed one gram of ginger in any case, especially if you are a pregnant woman.
Switch to FluidsWhen you have been feeling like you are about to throw up, eating solids is the last thing on your mind. But your body needs nourishment, which is why you should switch to fluids for a while. Drink sufficient water to stay hydrated. Drinking Gatorade is a good idea to replenish the levels of electrolytes in your body.
Freshly extracted non-citrusy fruit juices like watermelon, guava, apple etc are very good for your aggravated tummy.
Turn to the BRAT DietBRAT stands for Banana, Rice, Applesauce (Sugar-free) and Toast. If you have been feeling nauseated but haven’t vomited in the last 5 to 6 hours, it’s a good time to eat something light. Food is probably the last thing on your mind right now, but not eating is not the right way to treat nausea. The hunger will make you feel worse and may cause or aggravate the acid reflux.
The BRAT diet is a good alternative when you have food poisoning or the stomach flu. Not only it fills you up, it relieves the unsettling feeling from nausea. However, try not to be on it for a long time, for this diet lacks in several nutrients.
Use a Cold CompressIt might sound strange, but cold compress does a great job in relieving the symptoms of nausea. Sit down comfortably with your back against the walls and your knees up in front of you. Hold a cold compress against your head for a minute several times in an hour. The back of your neck is also the perfect spot to apply the cold compress. You will feel surprisingly better as you actually feel the queasiness gradually fade away.
Smell a Lemon WedgeThere are some scents that make you feel better. The scent of a freshly cut lemon is one of them. Take a lemon wedge and hold it close to your nose. Smell it by inhaling deeply. You should feel better after a few minutes. Some people like to suck on a lemon wedge. It is ideal to do so if an acid reflux isn’t causing nausea.
Use Some PeppermintPeppermint is yet another thing with a magically soothing scent. Apply some peppermint oil on the inner side of your wrist and smell it often. You can easily get some peppermint flavored tea in the market. Drink a cup of peppermint tea for instant relief. Alternatively, just suck on some peppermint candy.Don’t be too hard on yourself when you are experiencing dizziness and nausea. Take a break and rest till you feel better. When your body wants you to throw up, don’t hold it back. Let out whatever inside your tummy is causing all the trouble. Lastly, if nausea persists more than a day or two, see the doctor ASAP to determine the cause and treat it with medication.
