With each new single from Holly Miranda’s sophomore album, my excitement for the full release on May 19 seems to grow exponentially. Built on a base of delicately picked guitar, “Mark My Words” initially sells itself as a gentle, emotional piece, flourished only by single tambourine hits. As the chorus grows nearer, though, deep horn pieces and background vocals give way to quick, interesting percussive hits and strumming almost reminiscent of old Explosions in the Sky. The resulting combination feels unified yet pleasantly divided, each element taking turns at the forefront till the climactic explosion that ends the track.
