Deck the DIY gift ideas: Homemade mason jar lid Christmas tree ornaments

Christmas isn't just a time for giving; it's also a time for crafting! I love mixing the two and making my family homemade Christmas gifts every year. Sometimes I make my own cards, sometimes I bake- I've even made my own candles using teacups found at yard sales and thrift stores. But my favorite Christmas craft is mason jar lid tree ornaments.

You don't need to be crafty like me to create something festive and affordable. These ornaments are really easy to make- you may even have some of these supplies at home already.

Here's what you need:

  • Mason jar lids (rings and seals)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scrapbooking paper (or printed paper)
  • Ribbon, string, or twine
  • Scissors, pencil
  • Embellishments, buttons, stickers, etc.

These ornaments are very easy to make. Once you have the ornament assembled, you can decorate it any way you like. First, use the seal of the mason jar lid as a stencil. Place it on the patterned paper and trace around the outer edges with your pencil. Cut the circle out with the scissors. This will be the base of your ornament.

Before you assemble the ornament, loop a piece of ribbon, string, or twine through the ring of the mason jar lid and tie it off. This will be used to hang the ornament on the tree. Then place the paper circle over the mason jar seal and assemble the lid. Once it is assembled, use the hot-glue gun on the inside edge of the lid to secure the pieces together. Use hot-glue to fix the loop of ribbon to the inside of the lid so it doesn't move or slip. Be careful- it's hot!

Once the glue dries the fun part begins! Decorating the ornament! I used embellishments I found at the Dollar Store, buttons, stickers, and ribbon to decorate my ornaments. I tried to add touches that would personalize the ornaments for each person I was giving them to.

To add an extra personal touch, use photos instead of scrapbooking paper! You can even flip the mason jar lid and use the inside! Don't forget to sign the back of each ornament and write the year you gifted it to that special person in your life!
