A review of the book “Holes” by Louis Sachar.
This paper analyses the book “Holes” by Louis Sachar about a boy who is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not commit. It examines how all of the characters are overemphasized , with the exception of Stanley the main character and how it is made clear exactly what each character is supposed to be. It discusses how although this seems makes the characters unrealistic, its does not prevent the characters from being effective, since it matches well with the whole book not being set in reality.
The novel starts with Stanley arriving at Camp Green Lake. Immediately, the humor of the work is seen, with there being no lake and nothing green. This sets the novel up to be a story that is not your usual realistic story. Instead, it is strange and odd and interesting all at the same time. Stanley is sent out into the yard every day to dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep. It is this activity that is meant to make Stanley into a good boy. As the novel continues, Stanley learns that they are digging holes for other reasons, to uncover items left by the outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow.
