2020 Mahindra Thar recently underwent a Global NCAP #SaferCarsForIndia crash test and received a four-star rating. Interestingly, Mahindra Thar also earned four stars for child occupant safety. With this, it has also become one of the safest cars for underage passengers.
Most cars fail to achieve such an impressive rating for child occupants. So far, the only car to earn four stars for child occupants is Thar's younger brother, Mahindra XUV300.
NCAP Mahindra Thar Global Crash Test Report 2020
The crash-tested model was fitted with dual front airbags, a front seat belt pretensioner, four-channel ABS, Isofix anchor and SBR. It also had a roll cage structure which improves the overall safety of the vehicle. With these standard safety features, Mahindra Thar scored 12.52 out of 17 points for adult passengers and 41.11 out of 49 for child occupants.
According to the report, the neck and head protection of drivers and adults was rated as good. The driver's chest protection was adequate, while the passenger's chest was well protected.
The driver's legs showed marginal protection mainly due to the dangerous structure behind the dashboard. Overall, the body was found to be stable and capable of supporting loads.
The safest car for children
As mentioned earlier, Mahindra Thar scored 41.11 out of 49 points for the child occupants. It is the highest among all cars tested by Global NCAP in India.
According to the fact sheet, " the child seat for the 3 year old was installed FWF with ISOFIX anchorages and a top strap and was able to prevent excessive forward movement of the head on impact below the 550mm limit.
In short, the SUV provides good protection for children.
