Healthy Oat-Wholemeal Pizza Roll Ups

By Tejal Hewitt @Tejal_x

On Friday during my drive home after the school run, me and kids were chatting about what my son was going to make for dinner, as Friday is kids make dinner night in my house. My son suggested pizza, and then my daughter said calzones but wanted to make the dough themselves, so we decided on a compromise where we would a pizza/calzone cross by rolling up the pizza!

Pizza dough is actually pretty universal, you can make pizza, garlic flat bread, calzones and now even pizza roll ups. You can add any pizza toppings of your choice, we only used vegetarian toppings but you can use meat if you wanted, or even keep it vegan by adding no cheese. If you are using no cheese, then when you place the roll in the oven, make sure the seal side is facing down.

Adding oats to the pizza dough is a great way to add additional healthy nutrients and reducing the amount of white processed flour used. However the white flour is what gives the pizza dough it's unique texture and help the yeast activate.

Pizza dough making is such a great thing to do with your kids, helps them get involved, and hand kneading dough is a great way and time to spend sitting with your children and having a chat. You learn all the gossip that has been going on in school. Kids love making pizza dough in my house, as they make the dough and then add their own toppings too which some how gives them great satisfaction.

Ingredients
Dough
40g Oats
200g Wholemeal Strong Flour
100g White Strong Flour
1 Packet Yeast
225ml Warm Water
1 Tsp Sugar
1 Tsp Salt
1 Tbsp Oil
Sauce:
1/2 Tsp Oil
1 Chopped Onion
2 Garlic Chopped Cloves
1 Packet of Passata
1 Tsp Mixed Herbs
1/2 Tsp Pepper
1/2 Tsp Salt
Grated Cheese
Topping of Choice

Blend the oats into a milled oats

In bowl add the blended oats, whole wheat flour, strong plain flour, yeast, salt, sugar and oil to the dough.

Add warm water to the flour mixture.

Bring together to form a dough

Knead well for about 5-10 minutes to work in the gluten.

Allow to rise/prove for about an hour to an hour and a half.

Once risen, knock out the air from the dough then divide into 2.

Roll out the dough, this may take little longer than usual, as the yeast makes the dough spring back.

Make the pizza sauce but saute the onions, garlic and herbs, then add the passata and seasoning and cook for about 5-10 minutes, then spread over the dough.

Add the toppings of choice to the pizza dough, I used veggies.

Top with cheese

Roll up the dough tightly

Place the Pizza roll onto a baking tray

Prick with a fork over the top to allow the steam to flow through.

Bake in the oven at 220c for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Slice and enjoy
