Who is a Hacker?

A Hacker is a person who seeks and exploits vulnerabilities in a computer system. In most cases Hackers are motivated by a variety of reasons such as competition, enjoyment, profit, etc.

Hackers & Crackers

Some group of people say that the term hackers refers to someone who breaks into computers, whether criminal or computer security expert and all white hats are more appropriately called cracker instead. But some white hat hackersclaim that they deserve the title hacker, and the black hats should be called crackers.

How can hackers be classified?
  • White Hat
breaks security for non-malicious reasons such as to test their own security system. The term "white hat" hackers is also referred as ethical hackers.
  • Black Hat
violates computer security for little reason beyond maliciousness or for personal gain. The term "black hat" hackers is also referred as crackers.
  • Grey Hat
lies between a black hat and a white hat hacker. He/She breaks the security of the system to notify the system administrator about the vulnerability.
