Habitat for Humanity

By Thedivadoll @marlenefrierson
Over the weekend I got the chance to volunteer for HabiJax. HabiJax is the Jacksonville chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They have provided housing to nearly 1,800 families since 1988.
I have always wanted to volunteer my time for Habitat for Humanity, so when the group I am affiliated with at work ( GWN- Global Women's Network), was pulling together to do a volunteer day, I was all in.
Now let me tell you, due to popular belief, Habitat for Humanity homes are not FREE. They are just not giving these homes away. The individuals do have to take classes, as well as put down a down payment. They also have to put in 300 hours of time, 50 of those hours dedicated to helping to build their own home.
We met up very early on Saturday, around 7:30am ( yes I know that early on a Saturday)!
We had a briefing with our Team Lead for the day, Bessie ( awesome lady I might add). She informed  up that we would be painting.
Now, your Diva Doll can thrown down when it comes to painting, but let me tell you, my arms are killing me right now! I sure wish there was one of those asedeals car lifts but a portable one. I had to keep using the pole attached to the roller to get to the high parts. And I didn't just paint one room... this was a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with a living room, and dining room. Oh, and did I mention we had to paint inside the closets too!
But you know what, it was all well worth it. The feeling of helping someone achieve their dream of home ownership is plenty enough for me. I had a blast and would do it again in heartbeat.... maybe next time though, I can use a hammer! :)
I didn't really take a lot of pics because, let's face it, I was too busy painting! But we were able to sneak 2 in before we left for the day.

Have you ever volunteered for Habitat for Humanity? What job task did you get to do?
Until next time dolls!
