In keeping with her insight to the world of design, I thought I would share some basic design tips for decorating your mantel.
Symmetry:
I like to start my mantel design with a symmetrical vignette. You can start with a matching pair,
or by using objects that have the same visual weight. The vases and the flowers have equal impact on either side of the mirror.
Visual Interest:
This mantel design incorporates layers, texture, and interest. Visual interest was achieved by layering objects of varying heights. Notice the pyramid arrangement, which is very pleasing to the eye.
Texture:
There is a strong presence of texture in the above vignette as well: The branches and the moss communicate “rough” while the vases, votives and mirror lend a sense of “smooth” to the scene. The metal rings bring in more texture.
Here are few of my own interpretations of this design model:
The mantel tends to be a favorite for seasonal decor. And as you can see, these basic design principals work throughout the seasons.
