Guerlain celebrates World Bee Day

"The special agreement between Guerlain and bees goes back to 1853, when a bee landed on the bottle of a perfume expressly designed for Empress Eugenia: the Eau de Cologne Impériale. The bee has been the unmistakable emblem of the Maison for more than 160 years, to underline our close link with nature and the exceptional raw materials we select. These industrious insects not only inspire the products we create and our artistic process, but they are also the standard bearers of our commitment to promote a more world sustainable. Guerlain has made a bee out of it symbol. But not only: from 12 in fact he is dedicated to storage of the species. One species, that of bees, of which the May, 20th World Day is celebrated, at risk. Suffice it to say that the mortality of these insects, unique in providing food for humans, has risen from 5% to 20%. A very high percentage that endangers biodiversity and food security on our planet.

And Guerlain's commitment was formalized in one Paper and is supervised by a special Executive committee, assisted by a Management Committee representing the various divisions of the Maison. All staff participate in the initiative, to the point of adopting the bee vocabulary, of which Guerlain is a staunch defender. From the outset, sustainable development has become a common project that has involved all the teams and has tightened the company around a common cause.

In the name of beauty, Guerlain has achieved 10 years of environmental, corporate and social goals, 10 years of valuable results in terms of eco-sustainable design, protection of biodiversity, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, responsible purchasing and corporate social responsibility.

Here are the stages of Guerlain's commitment

  • Since 2011: Guerlain makes one partnership with the Brittany Black Bee Association (ACANB) on the island of Ouessant. Founded on two pillars: financial support and communication and research support

  • From 2015: Guerlain collaborates with the French bee observatory (Observatoire Français d'Apidologie). For the development of stock of hives throughout Europe and for the promotion of the value of the profession of beekeeper.

  • From 2017: the foundation of the Bee University. An event that brings together the best specialists in the sector to identify the best way The foundation of Bee University.   • From 2018: the foundation of Bee School. An awareness program for elementary school children conducted by the company's employees, which allows children to discover the important role played by bees and increases their awareness of our need to protect them.

  • From 2020: the start of the partnership with the UNESCO-MAB in collaboration with the French Bee Observatory (Observatoire Français d'Apidologie). Design a new one training for beekeepers to create new affiliated beekeepers worldwide and measure the benefits of pollination in biosphere reserves.

Furthermore, since 2015, Guerlain has supported the Observatoire Français d'Apidologie (www.ofapidologie.org) and decided to accompany its founder, Thierry Dufresne, in the project to train 30,000 new beekeepers and create 10 million new bee colonies in Europe by 2025. From the headquarters on the Sainte-Beaume Massif in southern France, OFA conducts genetic, molecular and behavioral research on various subspecies of bees, for a total of over one thousand colonies (50 million bees). One of the objectives of the OFA is to identify the most resistant parasite strains to understand what this characteristic is due to.

And since 2017 Guerlain Italia has been committed to supporting beekeeping by sponsoring " Beekeeping Seba and Vale", Beekeeping company certified Bio with Icea. The owners of this company, two enterprising young people who are particularly attentive to the issue of eco-sustainability, are committed to respecting nature and safeguard of the bee, aware of how indispensable this insect is for our survival.

  1. BUILD A SHELTER FOR INSECTS, WHICH WILD BEES WILL APPRECIATE PARTICULARLY.

  2. BUY ONLY CERTIFIED LOCAL HONEY, OR ASK DIRECTLY TO THE BEE-KEEPER!

  3. PAY ATTENTION TO WILD BEES WITH CHILDREN. DO NOT SPREAD PESTICIDES OR HERBICANTS IN THE GARDEN. PLANT GRASS AND FLOWERS, PREFERRING LOCAL VARIETIES.
