I want a “Groovy” button. Facebook has the “Like” button and Google has their “Plus 1” (Hello Plusketeers!) and I’m sure there’s a veritable cornucopia of other buttons that I don’t know about. So why isn’t there a “Groovy” button? Groovy is, for lack of a better word, really groovy! Why did this delicious word cease to be popular? When did people get so busy they no longer had time for kicking down the cobblestones, looking for fun, and feeling groovy? Nothing says groovy like groovy. I wasn’t always such a staunch supporter of the word. In fact, I don’t think I’d ever uttered it until I was sixteen. My mom and I had been on a Girl’s Day Out in Bangkok. We’d gone all out with manicures, new hairdos, and such an epic shopping spree that I could practically hear my father’s Amex groaning from overuse. To end the day in style, we decided to have High Tea at the Sukothai Hotel. Much to our delight, we discovered their afternoon tea was chocolate themed that week. When my mom caught sight of a chocolate-spurting fountain, she let out a low whistle and blurted, “Groovy!” While she is both compassionate and a free spirit at heart, my mom is a highly unlikely candidate for a hippie. She is also too young to have been part of the original movement. Hearing the word “Groovy” spring forth from her lips, was so improbable it made my jaw drop in wonder. “Groovy?” I repeated. “Really?” “Yes, really,” she replied evenly. “I reserve the word for only the most deserving occasions.” While my mom continues to use the word sparingly, I’m on a mission to spread it. I really want a “Groovy” button! Who’s with me?
