Gray's Degree Show: Fashion & Textile Design

By Jollygoodstudio @JollyGoodStudio
One of my favorite courses to visit at degree shows is Fashion and/or Textiles. It may be because it's what I studied, or perhaps it's just my love of clothes and dressing up, but it's always great to see what the students have created. Unfortunately the Gray's students were preparing for their fashion show AND New Designers so most of the work was elsewhere. Luckily a lot of the displays featured some stunning fashion photography so I still managed to get a sense of the collections.

Emma McMahon

Kristi Leslie

Joanna Crerar
I loved Emma McMahon's photos with there natural locations and haunting look. I was also drawn to the different techniques used in the garments shown and the mix of soft materials with more structured details. Plus, anyone who gives models antlers is a winner in my book.
Kristi Leslie's stark white garments suited the hospital location of her images perfectly. If only nursers outfits had this many interesting details and structure. That skirt is a beauty.
More amazing images from Joanna Crerar. These look like they come straight from the pages of a high end fashion magazine and the garments look like they belong there too. That green coat is just stunning.

Hayley McSporran

Sophie Holloway
I  really liked Hayley McSporran's display which used fashion illustrations to show the garments. The use of collage and fabric really showed the volume of the pieces. The gray and black color scheme also fit well with the name and branding of the collection.
Another collection with amazing volume was that of Sophie Holloway. Her shapes gave a strong ladylike silhouette which looked even more striking in the monochrome palette.

Rebecca  Brown
Rebecca Brown was a textile and surface design student who's work I really enjoyed, even though it was less fashion based. She focused more on using surfaces to tell a story with plates, egg cups and more featuring illustrations and poems.
I really wish I'd been able to stick around for the fashion show. Next year it will definitely be something I plan into my visit.
