Graffiti: It's the Name That Does It

Henry Chalfant, one of the first to document graffiti, says:
"The irony is I think it's the name, the writing your name, which caused it to become universally attractive, because of what that meant. To give an individual a voice, a visibility, that they could never have in any other way," he said. "If people just started out with murals and political statements, it would never have had the traction in the same way."
