Government Cuts And Suicide

By Therealsupermum @TheRealSupermum

Government cuts are causing a high rise in suicides. The mental health of benefit claimants is being put at risk by welfare reform.

Work capability assessments, which identify those fit for work, are singled out for criticism by health professionals, campaigners and claimants. I know all to well how Atos and these work capability work and you can read my personal experience of this.

These people took their own lives, the Government must take some blame.

Their unfair system is tormenting claimants and many are left so desperate that they see no other way out but to commit suicide.

I understand that the Government needs to make cuts, but do they understand the implications that their screwed up system has on those most vulnerable members of our society?

Paul Reekie

FRIENDS of an acclaimed Scottish writer have accused the new government’s crackdown on welfare benefits of being a factor in his suicide.

Paul Reekie, who, along with Irvine Welsh, was part of a wave of young Scottish authors who rose to international prominence in the 1990s, killed himself in his Edinburgh home last month.

The Leith-based writer and poet, who was 48, left no suicide note but friends say letters informing him that his welfare benefits were to be halted were found close to his body. source

Paul Willcoxson

A MAN with mental health problems who was worried about benefit cuts killed himself while he was searching for a job on the south coast, an inquest heard.

Paul Willcoxson, 33, was found hanging in Pignals Enclosure, near Hollands Wood campsite, Lyndhurst, by walkers on April 14.

The 33-year-old from Corby, Northants, was in the area searching for a summer job when he killed himself.

Deputy Southampton coroner Gordon Denson recorded a verdict of suicide.

Vicky Harrison

A bright 21-year-old killed herself after more than 200 unsuccessful job applications.

Vicky Harrison had dreamed of a career as a teacher or a television producer, but gave up hope for the future, her family said yesterday.

A day after her latest rejection, and on the eve of her fortnightly trip to sign on, she wrote heartbreaking notes to her parents and boyfriend saying ‘I don’t want to be me any more’ and took a huge drug overdose.

Her death last month tragically highlights the human cost of the highest level of joblessness since the mid-1990s. Rising youth unemployment has led to warnings about a ‘lost generation’. story
