I remember a lot about my childhood home. The sound of rain pitter-pattering on the street below my window, the curvature of our walnut staircase, dark stained glass peppering the Tiffany lamps in the living room, the squeaky screen door (that I once ran straight through), and of course, the signature wallpaper in my bedroom. A blend of off-white, sage green and pinky-mauve with tiny hearts delicately strewn about; it’s this kind of stuff that makes people cringe in remembrance of what exactly the word, “wallpaper”, used to entail. But today, wall art takes on an engaging, sophisticated and design-worthy appeal – without the fuss. No longer a kitschy thing of the past, wall coverings are back – with a stylish vengeance!
Perhaps one of the more exciting benefits (to parents and kids alike) are the extended options for childrens wall murals and teen bedroom decor. Families can devote an accent wall to a favorite sport, showcase a love of music or decorate a nursery in one fell swoop. Bringing personal identity into their space, teens would find this alternative to paint especially intriguing (and for the record, if I had this option growing up, Backstreet Boys would be ALL over the place)!
But it’s not just the kids who get to have all the fun. Some of my favorite swoon-worthy rooms are featuring bold wall coverings, and it’s amazing to see how one wall can set the stage to transform an entire space.
Has your concept of wallpaper changed? How would you use it in your home? I’d love to know!
