GOP Officials Oppose Relief Bill (But Their Base Supports It)

The COVID relief bill -- the $1.9 trillion bill proposed by President Biden -- has passed the House of Representatives. But it did so with no support from House Republicans. Every one of them voted against the bill.

Now the bill has moved to the Senate, and it looks like no Republicans will vote for it there either. They can't stop a vote on it, but they are doing everything they can to delay that vote. Senator Ron Johnson has made it mandatory that s Senate clerk read the entire 658 page bill. Then have plan a whole host of amendments to further delay it.

Those Republicans don't believe opposing the bill will hurt them in the next election. They could well be wrong about that. Note the chart above.

About 77% of American adults support the bill. And that even extends to the Republican base -- where 59% support the bill. Even after the bill was described as a Democratic Party bill, 53% of the GOP base still supported it.

The chart is from a recent Politico / Morning Consult Poll -- done between February 26th and March 1st of split national samples of 968 and 1,024 registered voters, with a 3 point margin of error.
