The Google Doodle for April 12, 2022, will commemorate the life of Montserrat Caballé. We know the following about her:

What was Montserrat Caballé’s tale, and who was she?
Mara de Montserrat Bibiana Concepción Caballé I Folch was born in Barcelona, Spain on April 12, 1933. Montserrat Caballé, nicknamed “La Superba,” was a Spanish opera soprano. She was characterized as having a “larger-than-life personality,” but the legacy she leaves behind is her music. In 1965, she made her American debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She was well-known all over the globe and gained opera stardom throughout her lifetime.
Her name became well-known among non-classical music fans in 1987 when she worked with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury on the song Barcelona. It was a big hit for the opera singer all across Europe, reaching No. 8 on the UK singles chart. They performed the song during Freddie’s last gig in Barcelona, the La Nit Festival, in 1988.
It went on to become the anthem for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and it helped the pair achieve additional chart success, reaching No. 2 in the United Kingdom. Following Freddie’s death in 1991, however, a planned performance of the song at the Olympics was canceled. Caballé was well-known for her bel canto singing style. The Washington Post describes Bel Canto as the “ultimate style of singing opera.” She acted until she was 80 years old when health difficulties forced her to retire from the stage.

Caballé married fellow opera diva Bernabé Marta in 1964, and they remained together until her death on October 6, 2018, at the age of 85. Their two children were Montserrat Mart, who often sang with her mother and Bernabé Mart Jr.

What does a Google Doodle honoring Montserrat Caballé mean?

Google has prepared a Google Doodle in honor of Caballé’s 89th birthday. “Happy 89th birthday, La Superba! Your legacy will endure,” Google commented on their Google Doodle website. Throughout her career, the legendary singer received five Grammy nominations.

Her first Grammy came for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1968. Despite being born and raised in Spain, the singer did not make her debut there. She made her professional debut in Switzerland before performing in Germany.
According to Google, Caballé has performed over 3,800 times in over 80 roles across five continents. In addition to her singing career, she was a philanthropist.
Fundació Montserrat Caballé, a Barcelona-based charity that nurtures young talent, was founded by her.

What exactly is a Google Doodle, and how does it function?

Google has created Doodles to honor anniversaries, births, and noteworthy days throughout history. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin designed the first-ever Google Doodle in honor of the Burning Man event in Nevada. Prior to Caballé’s Doodle, Google created one to mark Nomhle Nkonyeni’s 80th birthday, which will be on April 8, 2022.
