Helloooo! It feels like it has been ages since I last wrote here. Life has been as hectic as it was before but since I have cut all anime from my life, it’s much more manageable. It makes me pretty sad though but at least I can clear my backlog of movies. Sometimes, a break is good.
First movie in my backlog was the Blue Exorcist movie. Every 11 years a big festival is organized and the True Cross Academy participates. Obviously a big crowd means problems and our favorite Exorcists Rin, Yukio, Shiemi and the gang have a lot of work to do.
I was a big fan of the series…more of the manga than the anime. To be fair it was pretty average, but I still had to watch the movie. I’m a masochist like that, and I did not dislike it enough to completely give up on Blue Exorcist.
That being said, I cannot say that movies are usually something I like. The more anime I watch, the harder it is to stay focused on a movie from start to finish. Thankfully, this one only lasts for one hour and thirty minutes so it is perfectly watchable for my tired self.
Now, in terms of plot, I cannot say it was a bad movie. It was pretty much what I expected. I mean, there is a demon, several demons even, and the Exorcists have to… exorcise. Obviously things are a little more complicated than that but it more or less comes down to this.
Character development was not something they seemed to focus on either. I did not learn something new about anyone except the new characters. At the very least, while I did not learn anything new, they stayed consistent with the actual series, maybe even more than the anime did.
The Chinese Exorcist, one of the new characters, felt out-of-place in the movie. I do not understand why he is there, unless there is a sequel planned. On the other hand I did find Usamaro’s character interesting. (That’s the movie’s main demon.) He was interesting, not exactly for himself but for what he means.
I am not sure how to express myself there but Usamaro embodied, I believe, the moral of the story. Because the story had a moral which I actually found more interesting than the actual plot. It was literally shoved into my face but I did not find it annoying, because it was presented in a very cute way. I am not really sure why I liked the part on morals so much. It is nothing special at all, only generic things, yet I liked it. Maybe because it was something I found important as well.
As usual with this series, the music is perfect (Hiroyuki Sawano FTW!), the voice acting was great (how can you go wrong with Jun Fukuyama?) and the visuals were stunning. The manga has awesome decor, the anime was a little less flamboyant because well, it’s an anime, but this movie. God I had to pause to look at the landscape several times.
In short, good movie for fans and non fans, not hard to get into, not hard to get out of either. I enjoyed myself more than I did when I watched the anime so I guess that means it is good.
