Gingerbread House

By Tejal Hewitt @Tejal_x

In our house now, making a gingerbread house is a tradition at Christmas time. The kids have loved making and eating gingerbread houses since my son was 4 years old.

As we have making these from scratch without using a template mold, they can become a little structurally unstable. The joy of making gingerbread is priceless – specially when you know exactly what has gone into the biscuit.

Ingredients
180g butter
125g brown sugar
100ml black treacle
1 egg
400g plain flour
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp spiced spice
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda

Add the butter and brown sugar to a mixing bowl

Cream together the brown sugar and butter and then add black treacle and egg. Mix until combined

Add the remaining ingredients and mix well

Tip on top a sheet on cling film and wrap up. Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Roll out the dough and using a template ( i found this one online) Click here. Bake in the oven for 11 minutes at 170c and allow to cool

Using icing sugar and water as glue, build the house and decorate. We did ours with the kids, both kids did 95% by them selves! The above picture is my son’s house

This is my daughter’s version of the gingerbread house

With some remaining dough, we made some gingerbread men too!
