Protests swept through a number of major US cities on Thursday, with crowds taking to the streets to demand action against police brutality and the responsibility for several related deaths.

Minneapolis and St. Paul, known as Minnesota's "twin cities," have both seen huge protests. Protesters in St. Paul clashed with riot police, hitting tear gas canisters back and forth. More than 170 businesses were looted or damaged by the protests, police said.

And in Minneapolis, thousands of protesters surrounded a police station and burned it down. They spray-painted the sides of the building, tried to climb it, and cheered when the flames engulfed the building.

All personnel inside were evacuated before the fire.

Protesters marched through downtown for several hours in Memphis, Tennessee. They held up signs asking for justice for several recently killed black Americans - George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

Protests also escalated into violence in Louisville, Kentucky, where Taylor lived and was shot dead by police in March.

Shots were fired in the crowd during tonight's protests, said special police advisor Jessie Halladay.

Demonstrations have also taken place in other cities such as Denver, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona.
