George Clooney Doesn’t Think He’s Leading Man Material Anymore

Ok, so call me crazy, but I’ve never viewed George Clooney as THE leading man in Hollywood. More, like, the sly dude in the corner with Rande Gerber (both wearing matching black button-downs with three undone and well-brushed chest hair in plain sight) raising glasses of tequila at the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck because they can buy and sell them all with that Casamigos coin.

George recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new movie Suburbicon (which he co-wrote and directed). It’s a long interview, but at one point they talk about how it’s been a minute since you’ve last seen George in a movie. George has said in the past that he’ll probably stick to staying behind the camera, and he’s still kind of into that. You see, George is more about social justice and texting with Barack Obama these days, and less about being a movie star hunk.

“I haven’t acted in almost two years and I am not really sure when the next version of that would be. If somebody brought me The Verdict, I’d jump. But I’m not going to do movies just to be in front of the camera. I did that for a long time and I had a good run. And as you get older, the parts aren’t as interesting. I’m not a leading man anymore. Nobody wants to see me kiss the girl.”

Here’s a verdict, George: that’s a lie. Plenty of us would pay good money to see you lay a smooch on your accountant as soon as that Casamigos direct deposit hits. And yeah, I’m sure some people will miss watching George handsome-smirk at some actress for two hours. But any future roles are going to have to be pretty juicy to pull him out of semi-retirement. Who the fuck needs Oceans 97 when you can just sit around Lake Como all day, sipping wine with Amal Clooney and crank calling Angelina Jolie pretending to be the Nobel Prize Committee calling to give her an award?

Speaking of Amal, here’s George and Amal at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Suburbicon last week:
