The chart above was made from information contained in a new Pew Research Center survey. That survey was done between January 7th and 14th of a random national sample of 2,009 adults, and has a margin of error of 2.5 points (with the margin of error for Democrats at 4.3 points and Republicans at 4.2 points).
It shows that while a majority of Democrats and Republicans think their two leading candidates would make a good president, the general public is not convinced. About 64% of Democrats think Clinton would be a good president and 50% think Sanders would. About 56% of Republicans think Trump would be a good president and 53% think Cruz would.
But no candidate gets close to a majority thinking they would be a good president among the general public. Clinton has the highest percentage (35%), followed by Trump (31%), Sanders (30%), and Cruz (28%), Carson (26%), and Rubio (24%). The other candidates score only in the teens (including Jeb Bush).
It looks like both parties have a long way to go to convince Independents that their eventual candidate would be a good president.
