For True Blood episode 67, tempting the scene with Led Zeppelin’s In the Evening paid off in the end. Music supervisor Gary Calamar recently revealed to Radio.com that the Zeppelin version had been put in the episode as a placeholder until the song for the episode could be determined. This is called tempting because the production team sees the episode with the song and since it worked so well, Calamar says it would be difficult to see it with any other song if they didn’t get the rights. Luckily they did:
“…When you have a rich and costly song like ‘In The Evening,’ that can be a big problem. We tried many other songs that worked to varying degrees, but nothing worked as well as ‘In The Evening.’ So after discussions, negotiations and hoop jumping, we hammered out a deal. And we are thrilled to have the song in the show.”
Every True Blood script comes with a song and a title. But the song doesn’t always stay. Case in point 5×08, “Someone I Used to Know,” was going to be the Gotye song of the same name. But it became a massive success between when the script was written and it came time to discuss the music. That’s why there is a spotting session:
“When we get to our spotting session it is decided if that writer’s song choice will actually work, or if I need to find a replacement. I would say it’s about 50/50 that the original song sticks.”
