This winter season, HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery will create digital collectible NFTs based on the epic fantasy genre in order to attract “Game of Thrones” enthusiasts and generate more revenue. Warner Bros.’s department of consumer items Discovery revealed plans for “Game of Thrones: Build Your Realm,” which will let users purchase unique NFTs as well as trade and sell them.
WBD did not offer a release date beyond stating that it will occur later in 2022, nor did it provide pricing or other details. On the “GOT” NFT project, the media company is once again cooperating with Nifty’s, which operates an NFT platform focusing on fan communities. NFTs are secure and decentralized means for proving digital content ownership.
The “Game of Thrones: Build Your Realm” collecting experience will begin with the sale of “GOT”-inspired avatars accompanied by a pack of digital collectibles “allowing users to begin their journey and upgrade their avatar,” according to the companies. In addition, “thematic activities, on-site engagement and additional digital collectibles.”will be included in the multi-stage launch. The “Game of Thrones” NFTs will be available in a variety of packs and will contain “Equipables” (weapons, companions, and accessories) that allow users to personalize their avatar. Other “Game of Thrones” NFT collection categories will include “iconic moments, locations, characters and more.”
The “GOT” NFT plans were unveiled by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products one week after the final episode of prequel “The House of Dragon,” which had the most viewership for an HBO season finale since “Game of Thrones” ended its eight-season run in 2019.
Josh Hackbarth, head of NFT commercial development at Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement, “Our goal, as always, with the fans is to create new ways for them to interact with the stories and characters they love. “We’re excited to expand the ‘Game of Thrones’ fandom and franchise with this unique digital collectible program that’ll engage fans on a deeper level, allowing them to immerse into the world of Westeros, and enhance the overall fan experience.”
Daz 3D, which designed and launched DC’s Bat Cowl NFT project, will collaborate on the design, development, and manufacture of the “Game of Thrones” collection.
Other NFT efforts implemented by Warner Bros. with Nifty’s include the distribution of free NFTs featuring characters from “Space Jam: A New Legacy” to fans and the sale of 100,000 NFTs for “The Matrix” to coincide with the release of “The Matrix Resurrections.” Discovery Global Consumer Products has cooperated with Funko on a number of NFT products, including a Halloween-themed release on October 31 including characters from horror films such “The Conjuring,” “The Exorcist,” and “It.”
In collaboration with Eluvio and independently, Warner Bros., Home Entertainment created an NFT platform to offer limited-edition collector bundles of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” last week. It is the first time a major studio has exclusively released a film as part of an NFT.
Warner Brothers Discovery stated in its “GOT” NFT announcement that HBO would hold the Game of Thrones Official Fan Convention from December 9-11, 2022 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
