If others refuse to comply, the fundamentalists take that as a personal knock on them and their religion. For them, religious freedom means only that they should be free to force their religion on others (even if those others want no part of it). Tolerance and true freedom are foreign concepts, which they don't understand at all. I'd like to think there's a cure to prevent fundamentalism from spring from religion, but I don't think there is. It's just the nature of the beast.
