Frozen Cake

By Kalamitykelli @venuscorpiogirl

The Disney Frozen movie is all the rage this year, especially now at Christmastime.Little girls are clamoring for dolls, blankets, clothes, and just about anything else related to the movie. Since Rocket is not interested in 2 hour movies or princesses, I had not seen it but Top Girl is a big fan of the TV show Once Upon A Time that has a Frozen theme this season so I was not completely ignorant when my friend ShaRhonda from The 4 Crows blog asked if I would participate in her Very Pinteresting Christmas project this year suggesting that I make a Frozen cake much like my Halloween Witch cake. You should go over and take a look at her blog and the Pinterest board, it has great ideas!

I thought ShaRhonda’s idea was perfect so I started making cakes. Dear heaven, I had no idea this cake was going to be so difficult! I wanted to make the cake with two full dolls so it was going to take more than one cake but since I had to make the cake FOUR TIMES I ended up buying so many cakes I now own stock in a cake mix company. I made many mistake and in the end, while the cake is not perfect it did make the great-granddaughter of my mother’s neighbor VERY happy because not only did she get a pretty cool “striped” cake but she got two brand new Barbie Dolls that her family had not been able to purchase for her in the past. She didn’t even notice that it was not professionally made – she just squealed with delight at the blue icing, sprinkles, and sheer height of it all. She was completely delirious with joy when she found out she got to keep the dolls too. I think that’s what cooking is all about anyway – making people happy.

Before we get to the part about how to make this, if you haven’t been over to this POST you better get there quickly because the giveaways end very soon!

Here’s what you’ll need:

4 Cake Mixes – you can either use the same kind or mix it up like I did.
Ingredients to make the cakes by box directions
3 Cans of Icing – 2 white and one Funfetti Aqua Blue or 3 White.

1 bag Coconut
1 container of Royal Blue Food Coloring
If you bought 3 cans white icing you will also need Aqua Blue Food Coloring
Toothpicks (lots of these!)
2 Frozen Dolls

2 nine-inch round cake pans
1 metal or glass bowl that has a nine-inch perimeter at top of bowl
Various other candies etc…. that you may want to use

Directions:

Mix up the first cake mix and split it between the 2 nine-inch cake pans. These cakes will bake “thinner” than a normal cake but that’s good.

After you have baked and cooled the cakes and washed the pans, mix up the next two cake mixes separately according to box directions and pour one bowlful into each cake pan. These cakes will be pretty thick and will take longer to bake so watch it carefully.

Finally, mix up the 4th cake mix and put into a greased bowl baking the amount of time listed for a Bundt Cake.

After all cakes were cooled, I wrapped them up and put them in the freezer for what started out as the next day and ended up being the next week – so you could make them very early and go back later.

When I took the cake out of the freezer, I used a can to make holes in the middle and then measured the dolls and the cakes – trimming what needed to be trimmed to make the cakes flat and to determine if I needed all the cakes. I did.

Using toothpicks I stacked all the cakes together.

Put one can of icing in the microwave for 10 seconds then pour the icing over top of cake smoothing out all around the outside. This is the “crumb coating”. Then put in the fridge for about 20 minutes. I lost track of time and it stayed in for an hour and it was fine.

Mix the 2nd can of icing with royal blue food coloring putting in more coloring until it is the color you need. It took nearly ½ of that little container to make mine blue enough.

If you use the aqua colored icing, put some white icing in if you have it so it will lighten the color a little. If you use white icing, then put enough of the aqua food coloring in to make it the right color.

Once your icing is made, spread each color over ½ the cake. Then using a frosting tip – I used the Oodle Doodle because they are so convenient – pipe up the sides to smooth them out a little.

You can use the sparkle sprinkles and then other sprinkles to decorate the cake to resemble the dresses on the dolls.

I used a Snow Ball snack cake and some eyes to make “Olaf” and some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Hershey’s Kisses to make some decorated Toadstools (just because they were fun to make).

Take the clothes off the dolls and then put a rubber band around their legs so they stay together and then wrap in Plastic Wrap.

Put the dolls down into the cake and again, using the Oodle Doodle, pipe around between the cake and the dolls and decorate as desired.

I set up the cake by putting the bag of coconut around and then setting the cake (which was on a Wilton Cake Stand) on top and put the Snow Ball Olaf and one of the Reese’s Mushrooms in the coconut.

It was a huge hit. The adults really liked the combination of white and blue velvet cakes and the kids loved the icing and sprinkles. If you make it, please let me know how you liked it!
