Sweet Molly Malone
“In Dublin’s fair city,Where the girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone, As she wheeled her wheel-barrow, Through streets broad and narrow, Crying, “Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!”‘
It’s hotly debated whether the song was written for a particular Molly. Still, “Molly Malone” has become Dublin’s unofficial anthem, and so this statue was erected to commemorate the city’s millenium celebration in 1988.
It has also become a popular tourist attraction, often irreverently called ”The Dolly with the Trolley,” ”The Tart with the Cart,” “The Dish with the Fish,” “The Trollop with the Scallop,” and “The Flirt in the Skirt”.
If you want to see the statue when you’re in Dublin, you can find it on Grafton Street.
