Hannah Thomas left the South and all that was familiar to marry her beloved John. But the fact that she’s never been quite accepted by his mother and sister and that she doesn’t quite fit the strict Massachusetts Puritan community only becomes more difficult when John is killed in one of the first battles in the war for freedom. Hannah is allowed to continue to serve as lightkeeper for the twin tower lighthouses on the lonely coastline, but it is grueling work for a woman alone.

One of the first shipwrecks washes ashore a handsome captain she thinks is a Tory, but she soon finds out he’s working as a spy for Washington. Much stands in the way of their happiness including the need to protect his secret, pressure from John’s family to marry another, near-constant disapproval from the townspeople, and the appearance of Hannah’s wayward sister. Coupled with the strain of war, Hannah isn’t sure she’ll ever see the light of freedom.

I’ll be honest – I love anything written by Colleen Coble, and she’s definitely one of my favorite suspense/mystery/romance authors. Harper Collins provided me with a copy of this historical novel by Colleen Coble, and it was definitely different than her other novels.

First off, this novel seemed to have more “adult content” than any of her others. It actually surprised me.  Another truth – I’m not generally a fan of historical fiction.  Thank you to Ms. Coble for providing us with interesting historical facts about the Revolutionary war without being overbearing about it.

Hannah has lost her much older husband as he was shot as a spy. Unfortunately for Hannah, she is facing all kinds of trouble – she has to manage the lighthouse on her own, she has to deal with her younger sister, and her mother in law. At the same time, Hannah is also trying to steer clear of her former suitor.

Birch Meredith is a spy who is looking for the man who killed his brother so that he can inflict his revenge. His ship runs onto the bottom of the shallow water close to Hannah’s lighthouse. She takes care of Birch while his broken leg heals. While their conversations are very interesting, they will never have a future together because Birch is with Tory.  Hannah then makes a discovery that could change her life.

As always, the author creates well developed characters in this book. I especially loved how Hannah was able to face her life challenges God’s grace. I would recommend this novel to Colleen Coble fans, especially those who like historical suspense and romance.
