Newborn Santa Earflap Hat Pattern
Gauge:

Abbreviations: 
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Sl st = slip stitch
Sts = stitches
St = stitch
Ch = chain
( ) = Number of total stitches in the round/row
Materials:
Size I crochet hook
Size J crochet hook (adult size only)
Size H crochet hook
Needle
Red, Black, White and Yellow worsted weight yarn (for the hat pictured I used Redheart With
Love solids)
Soft White fluffy yarn for trim (optional), for the pictured hat I used Bernat: On The Fringe in
Snow

Hat:
Round 1: Ch 2, 5sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with a sl st to first chain stitch. (6)
Round 2: Ch 2, dc in same st, 2dc in next st and each around. Join with sl st to top of beginning
ch 2. (12)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, 2dc in each of the following sts. Join with sl st to top of ch 2.

Round 4: Ch 2, 2dc in next st, *dc in next, 2dc in next* around. Join with sl st to top of the
beginning ch 2. (36)
Rounds 5-8: Ch 2, dc in first st and each st around. Join with sl st to top ch 2.

*Tie off red yarn and slip stitch with black yarn to join.
Rounds 9-10: (With Black Yarn) Ch2, dc in first st and each st around. Join
with sl st to top of ch 2. (36)

*Tie off black yarn and slip stitch with red yarn to join.
Round 11: (With Red Yarn) Ch 2, dc in first st and each st around. Join with sl st to top
of ch 2. (36)

Earflaps:
1st Earflap:
Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next 8 sts
Row 2: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog
Row 3: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog
Row 4: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog twice
Row 5: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog
Tie off red yarn.
2nd Earflap:
Skip 9 sts from the 1st earflap and sl st with red yarn to join.
Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next 8 sts
Row 2: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog
Row 3: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog
Row 4: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog twice
Row 5: Ch 2 turn, dc2tog
Tie off yarn.
Weave in all loose ends.

Trim:
With white fuzzy yarn, slip st to beanie to join and ch 1. Sc in next st and
each st around. Sl st to ch 1 to join.


Buckle:
With Yellow Yarn and size H crochet hook
Round 1: Ch 20, sl st to 1st chain to join round. *Be careful not to twist the chain
Round 2: Ch 1, (sc in the first 4 chain sts, 3 sc in the following chain st: this creates the corner
of the square) repeat three more times. Sl st to top of ch 1 to join the round.
Round 3: Ch 1, sl st in next st and each st around. Sl st to top of ch 1 to join round.

Tassels:
Cut 24” lengths of yarn (or twice the desired length of the tassels) in your desired colors. In the
example I use red yarn and plain white yarn. I used 4 lengths of yarn per color but you may use
more or less depending on your desired tassel thickness. Fold the lengths of yarn in half and use
a large crochet hook to pull the yarn through the bottom of one earflap. Divide the yarn into
equal thirds and braid. Tie at the bottom and cut the ends evenly. Repeat on the opposite
earflap.

Finish:   Weave in all loose ends on the hat.
