So just like last year, this year’s books for the Fall Reading Challenge fall under different “courses” and “departments”. The course title for this book is Forensic Sciences and the department is Psychological Thriller…..and they aren’t kidding either!
Even though I’m a little late jumping on the Karin Slaughter bus, I wasn’t lost while reading The Kept Woman even though it was book #8 in the “Will Trent” series. I’m betting that I missed a lot of the back story, but if I didn’t know it was book #8, I felt that the book could serve as a “stand alone” book. (Not saying I can’t wait to go back and read books #1 through #7 in the series!)
The focus of this story is on Will Trent and and his wife, Angie and the issues that come up between Angie and Will’s girlfriend, Sara. The past is all tied together with the current case that the department is currently working on. Will and Sara are investigating a crime scene in an Atlanta warehouse involving the body of an ex-cop. There are footprints actually leading away from the crime scene that reveal another victim who has vanished.
To make matters more interesting, the warehouse has connections to a “high profile” athlete – a local hero- who of course has the world’s most expensive attorney protecting him. Will has also spent the last six months investigating this same athlete for the brutal rape of a woman.
I really liked that the second half of the book was told from Will’s wife, Angie’s perspective. She appears to be involved but how much and why. As most people know, I do not write spoilers, so this one is pretty hard to write about without giving something away.
I felt like the author really took her time shaping each character and developing them for the readers so that we could really feel like we knew them. I also loved the way the plot was written, slow and steady, with a perfect “unfolding”. I felt like there wasn’t a chapter in this book that didn’t have my emotions running all over the place too, which kept me turning page after page to learn more.
