Police have initiated a special investigation on four police officers attached to the Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit of Kelaniya who are said to have robbed foreign currency to the value of Rs.4 million and jewelry from a woman who had returned to the country from India on Wednesday (9) night.
As reported, the team of police officers including a Sub Inspector, Sergeant and two Constables who had gone to the Katunayake area in a private vehicle had given chase to the van the woman was traveling in to Colombo with another person and had arrested them with the driver at Ja-Ela area stating that they were being arrested for engaging in smuggling of goods to the country.
Later, they had been brought to the Peliyagoda Police station by these officers and were released later by releasing only a certain amount of money and jewelry taken into their custody from the woman.The suspected officers had neither recorded this arrest in the police book nor informed a senior officer about it.
The victimized woman who is a resident of Wariyapola had reported this incident to the DIG in charge of Western Province (North) Rohan Premaratne and he had ordered the SSP of Kelaniya A.J.Y.D. Priyantha to conduct an investigation into the incident. According to her complaint, the officers had not returned four bangles, six rings and US$ 3,800 in cash belonging to the woman. Following the preliminary investigations, police have interdicted the relevant officers until the completion of investigations. It has also been revealed that the said officers have not obtained any prior permission to conduct such a raid well.
