The third secretary of Sri Lanka Embassy in Oman, E. Kushan who was remanded over the human trafficking of women to Oman, has been enlarged on bail. The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday.
The suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs.100,000 and two sureties of Rs.5 million each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on him. The Magistrate further ordered him to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) every Sunday of each week.
When the matter was taken up before the Magistrate, the Criminal Investigations Department informed court that information has been revealed regarding 24 foreign employment agencies in Sri Lanka, in connection with human trafficking.
“Accordingly, three agency owners have already been arrested in connection with the incident and investigations are under going to arrest the rest of the agency owners”, the CID further added.
The Criminal Investigations Department also stated that 97 Sri Lankan women are housed at the safe house operated by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oman.
President’s Counsel Chanaka Ranasinghe appearing for the suspect told court that there is a question regarding the jurisdiction of this case.
The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for January 24.
