We found our thrill in Millbrae hill
Millbrae hill cafe recently opened in the Battlefield/Langside area in the Southside of Glasgow and has settled in to become a firm favourite of locals quickly (it used to be 1901 cafe).
Inside the decor is muted with colour from the seating and some pieces of artwork.
I loved the spider-like lighting, part-hipster, part...well, there's light needed here!
Menu
The brunch menu runs until 12 weekdays but is available all-day Saturday and Sunday. As well as the cooked breakfast there is also French toast, poached egg & avocado on tiger bread and salmon with cream cheese bagel.
The lunch menu had soup of the day (lentil on our visit) and a selection of baked potatoes, paninis, sandwiches and more.
Food
We decided on a couple of flat whites to (attempt to) wake us up. Made using Glasgow roasters Thomson's St Vincent blend. A mild blend which needs no sugar at all. A creamy, good all-round coffee.
Mr Foodie ordered macaroni and cheese with bacon and garlic bread (£6.95) from the lunch menu, while I picked French toast with bacon and maple syrup (£5.50) from the brunch selection.
Mr Foodie's macaroni was a deceptively filling portion of cheesy pasta topped with melted cheddar, ample bacon pieces and two tasty slices of garlic bread.
We were stuffed, but those cakes were calling out...
A good range of sponge cakes (there was more on top), scones, flapjacks, lemon drizzle, rocky road, millionaire shortbread etc. and tablet to take-away.
So we had to try, purely for research purposes.
A fruit scone and a huge slice of Victoria sponge were ordered. The sponge was moist with the jam filling soaking into the sponge. Made on site these cakes were 👌 though we could barely eat them after our filling mains so took them up the road...
Toilets were inspected, clean and tidy with baby changing facilities. Just watch your step going in. Wi-fi is available and worked well. Service was friendly and the cafe was very busy with a mixed turnover of lunches and those in for coffee and cake. It's only been open a few weeks but it already has a definite community feel. Worthy of a visit!

Buses: Firstbus 34, 89 and 90 and Glasgow Citybus 374 stop at the Battlefield monument (1 min walk). The 5 and 6 stop a bit further away on Battlefield Rd (5 min walk).
Train: nearest station is Mount Florida (<10 min walk)
