New brunch menu at the Glad Cafe

Hen of the Woods, from the team behind The Hug and Pint on Great Western Road is the latest daytime residency at The Glad Cafe in Crossmyloof near Shawlands. Unlike The Hug and Pint, the food here isn't entirely vegan but much of it is.

Hen of the Woods is also the name of an edible fungus but there wasn't much in the way of mushrooms on the menu when we visited but please note that the menu is liable to change.

We pulled ourselves out of bed yesterday morning and wandered down Pollokshaws Road for a visit.

Inside the tardis that is The Glad Cafe.

Menu

Coffee, tea and other drinks are supplied as usual from The Glad Cafe. Take a Menu from the bar and pick a table. We started with a flat white and a pot of tea whilst looking over the menu.

Hen of the Woods food

I was sure Mr Foodie would have picked the vegan Kimchi pancake, silken tofu, soup wakame salad, sesame and ponzu dressing (£6.50), but not so, maybe next time.

I was nearly swayed by the vegan coconut and palm sugar porridge, roast plums and hazelnuts (£4), as I'm a big fan of pimped-up porridge! There's also the big vegan fry-up at £10 if you are really hungry - shiitake and lentil haggis, pickled chilli baked beans, miso mushrooms, roast tomatoes, home fries, potato scone, sourdough toast. Another one for Mr Foodie there. If that's all too adventurous there is simply two eggs cooked any style with sourdough toast for £4.50.

Feeling semi adventurous, we picked the following:-

Vegetarian fried halloumi, chilli and lime (£4) - ideal snacking food, crisp and squeaky halloumi with a warming hint of chilli. I was so happy munching away at these that Mr Foodie almost missed out!

Vegan home fries, seaweed salt (£3.50) like mini roasted potatoes with a covering of umami tasting salt. Perfectly cooked, we found out that these go well with the coconut and turmeric soup below!

Vegan coconut and turmeric soup, noodles, rainbow chard, tofu puffs (£8.50) Now this was a portion! A bowl filled with noodles and broth. Topped with sweet pillow-like tofu, chard for greenery and freshly sliced (mild) chilli. Creamy, a bit like a Thai curry and perfect for the winter weather ahead.

Poached eggs, salted yogurt, chilli brown butter, sourdough toast (£7.50). Creamy yoghurt with chilli butter, not hot just warming chilli with more of a smoked paprika taste (which isn't a bad thing!) all mixed together. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Just a slight amount of goo in the middle so that it can be eaten and not slurped! Use the sourdough toast to dip in and enjoy 😍.

Verdict

👍

With an interesting selection of food to pick from, we were full to the brim afterwards and happily so. We could easily have done without the halloumi and home fries but they sounded too good to miss. The yoghurt/butter combo was interesting and a success. It's a bit different from the standard Shakshuka which has become quite popular on Glasgow menus at the moment. We also both loved the soup/noodle dish. It's comforting and very filling in this weather. Our only complaint is that the food took a while to arrive - the cafe was busy and the food is made fresh.
Overall, thumbs up from us, I think we'll be back again soon!

Although we were full it still didn't stop us from taking some cake home for later! Yum!

TL;DR

+ West end food comes Southside
+ A bit different
+ Tasty and filling
+ Vegan-friendly

- Be patient, the food can take a while if the cafe is busy
