Due to heavy rains of over 75mm expected in the Southern Province within the next 24 hours, the Nilwala Ganga is already reaching a high flood level, and there is a high risk of the water overflowing the flood protection bunds at some locations, the Irrigation Department said.
Accordingly, the low-lying areas of the Nilwala Ganga valley in the Matara, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Athuraliya and Akuressa Divisional Secretariats zones are under threat of major floods.
Residents of these area motorists using these areas are requested to be cautious in order to save valuable lives and public and private properties.
The flood-prone areas are Grama Niladhari Divisions in Athuraliya, Akuressa, Malimbada, Tihagoda, Matara and the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat Division.
