Flightfest - 15th September 2013

I'm sure some of you have heard of Flightfest already but I bet the title of this post has a few of you scratching your head! Flightfest is an international aviation event which will be held on Sunday the 15th of September in Dublin City. It's part of The Gathering initiative and will see over 30 aircraft, both old and new, making a flypast along the path of the River Liffey. I have a feeling it's going to be awesome!

There are number of aircraft which I am really excited to see at close range. Firstly the historic B-17 Flying Fortress. You might remember this World War II bomber from the movie Memphis Belle. Another aircraft I'm looking forward to seeing is British Airway's A380, the worlds largest passenger aircraft. It's a double-decker, extra wide, four jet engine monster. Imagine that flying just above your head! The Irish Air Corps and Royal Airforce will also be putting in appearances along with lots of others. Check here for a full list.

The Docklands area from the Eastlink Bridge to Custom House Quay will be pedestrianized for the event. There'll be lots to do on the ground too with family attractions and food stalls out in force. A carnival atmosphere is promised, I've no doubt that this is going to be great fun for all members of the family. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Flightfest is billed as one of the biggest events of The Gathering so get into the city early and claim your spot. The flypast starts at 12pm and will take two hours to complete with one aircraft sequenced every five minutes. For more information keep an eye on the festival website
