Five Portland Places With the Strangest Food Toppings

By Kathleen O'Malley @frugalportland

PopRocks as a topper for sushi? Spam on your burger? Yum.

Portland is famous for being a unique place to live – but did you know that it’s also renowned for its strange food toppings? After putting this story idea out there to the masses, I was amazed with what I heard back from my fellow Portlanders. Consider the following crazy AND bizarre toppings on your next Portland outing:

Salt & Straw

One of the greatest places to ever pop up in Portland, Salt & Straw offers flavors like blood pudding ice cream and Oregon Black Truffle. You may need to wait in a long line (even in the rain) to try these unique toppings but I promise it’s worth it.

Honey lavender!

The Pop Rock Roll at Sushi Mazi

We all know that Voodoo’s doughnuts are topped with everything from Fruit Loops to Captain Crunch, but what about Pop Rocks on your sushi roll? Sound delicious? Perhaps – I wasn’t brave enough to try this roll.

Hawaiian Breakfast: Spam with that?

The Hawaiian Breakfast at Brunch Box PDX offers a huge menu. So if spam isn’t your thing, you’ll be able to find something else. But if you’re looking for a sandwich with spam, Swiss, pineapple, fried egg, and teriyaki – they’ve got it. Not into spam? Get bacon or ham at no charge.

Meat Cheese Bread

Under their hot sandwiches menu, there is – drum roll, please – a Green Bean sandwich. Perhaps you’re a vegetarian or just need to add greens to your diet? Tasty grilled green beans, bacon relish, soft boiled egg, parmesan, and aioli are the toppings. Enjoy!

Oven & Shaker Pizza

This is my favorite! The Maple Pig has apple butter, pork belly, smoked ham, maple mascarpone, and ricotta. If that’s not daring enough for you then just add a duck egg as an additional topping!

What do you think? Do these toppings qualify PDX to be on yet another “weird” list? Which of these would you love to eat? If the Pop Rock Roll is just too over the top, try the Maple Pig (and, trust me, don’t get this pizza without the duck egg). Let us know in the comments if we missed any other strange toppings in the Rose City that we should add to this list!
