What could be more perfect than to spend a balmy summer evening beside one of Perth's magnificent beaches, sipping an ice-cold Aperol Spritz while snacking on scrumptious seafood? If this sounds like an awesome way to unwind then I suggest you head down to Coast Port Beach, North Fremantle this weekend and be part of the inaugural Fish & Sips Festival.
There are over 30 stalls of fresh, local seafood and beverages to choose from which are spread throughout the cordoned off carpark leading up to the Coast restaurant and also down to the beach where a marquee is set up to watch the cooking demonstrations. We were entertained by excellent musicians on centre stage and a fire twirler on the sand. I recommend wandering the stalls first to sample as much of the delicious fare as possible, starting with sweet prawns.
If you request a tasting size the portions are pretty much just a couple of mouthfuls, but the flavours are incredible. The Fremantle sardine pasties with sausage meat were a big hit as were the Spanish Mackeral kebabs with spinach. I also tried the Louisiana Cajun Whiting, served on a corn chip. It adds something when you watch the chef cook it before your eyes and you're confident it couldn't be any fresher. Other choices at this particular stall include Scallop on pea puree or a garlic prawn.
This steaming pot of paella boasted squid, prawns and rice and just enough spice.
What could look more appetising than this colourful array of fresh produce? Hoki Poke offer Salmon, Kingfish and Prawn Poke in 3 different sizes.
You can't go wrong with a fish taco or serving of fish and chips in the larger portion sizes. These are more expensive than the tasting sizes but a decent enough amount to fill you up, especially if you had already snacked on your way around.
Of course, food must be washed down and there are several stalls devoted to wine and beer tastings. The bright orange drink is Aperol, orange, Prosecco and soda water which was lovely and cool but left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth so I had to chase it with a Margaret River Shiraz which was more to my liking.
