First Show of Spring Flowers

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

Winter has finally ended and now it is time for the spring flowers to start making their first appearances of the year.

After what seemed like a never ending winter which stretched on for months we all wondered whether spring would actually come this year. Now though the temperatures are gradually getting higher, the days are becoming longer and flowers are back in our countryside’s and forests. Crocus is generally considered the first flower in spring but there are many more flowers which bud earlier.

The earlier blooms are generally short in stature and have smaller flowers than summer plants but when planted in mass they have the same effect as larger flowering bulbs.

The smaller blooms are usually ignored by flower growers as they prefer the larger blooms like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. However the smaller blooms are important as it gives the flower grower the brilliant feeling that spring is finally here and it allows them to admire flowers for a longer period of time.

Like all good spring flowers it is better to buy the flowers in the autumn and to plant them then so it may be too late for this spring but you can try it out for yourself this autumn.
